PARISH GENERAL AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETINGS – February 26/2012: These two important meetings will be held immediately following the Fellowship Hour. All members of the Parish are urged to attend these meetings for the conduct of Parish business and the election of the Executive Board for 2012.

Parish Theophany Meal (Spil’na Kutia) – Cancelled

Unfortunately due to the winter weather we are regrettably cancelling our Feast of Jordan Meal. We will endeavour to host the dinner on Sunday after the regular Divine Liturgy.

PLEASE NOTE: The Eve of Epiphany Prayer Service will still be held at 6:00pm.

January 18th marks the Eve of Epiphany which is part of our Ukrainian Orthodox practice. The prayer service will commence at 6pm followed by the traditional Christmas Eve meal in the Auditorium.

The cost of the meal will be as follows: Adults $10; Youth (12 -18) – $5; and Children under 12 years – free.

We also will join the Cathedral Choir in the singing of some of our beautiful Ukrainian Christmas carols. Please do plan to attend this special event.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

On this Great Day of Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ our Parish Priest Fr. Roman and Parish Executive wish to extend their good wishes to His Eminence Yurij, Archbishop of Winnipeg and the Central Diocese, Metropolitan of Canada; Their Graces Bishops Ilarion and Andriy; all the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, all members and adherents of the Cathedral Parish; our Youth, the Cathedral Choir, all Ukrainian organiza- tions and all the people in Ukraine and throughout the world. Malanka Celebration

We are preparing a wonderful evening to celebrate our Malanka (Ukrainian New Years Eve) on Saturday, January 14th, 2012.

Cocktails: 5:30, Dinner: 7:30, Dance and Entertainment:8:30!

This will include the traditional Malanka program by our youth along with great food and entertainment.

Church Maintenance Volunteer Request!

Once again we are appealing to the membership and adherents to assist with the ceiling tile removal project in the lower (classroom ) level that will be underway next week.

There are also a number of other projects of a maintenance nature that need to be undertaken. Please call Walter Malko at 604-299-8204 or leave a message at the office at 604-876-4747.

Let’s not leave such a big task to a few people who are already

over extended in their volunteer contributions. We really need your help for these projects. Many thanks.

Christmas & New Year’s Service Schedule

For the Christmas and New Year’s Celebrations, Ukrainian Orthodox Holy Day Services will be held as follows:

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 18 – St. NICHOLAS DAY- Divine Liturgy 10:00 a.m. Followed by a short program put on by the Ukranian and Sunday school children, with gifts from St. Nicholas!

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 25 – SERVICE at 10 a. m. Many of our friends are celebrating Christmas according to the New Calendar. We want to greet them with the Joy of this season and the Blessing bestowed on us all with the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

SUNDAY, January 1st – Sunday before the Nativity of Christ – Divine Liturgy 10:00 a.m.

SATURDAY, January 7th – CHRIST’S NATIVITY – Great Compline 9:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy 10:00 a.m.

SUNDAY, January 8th – SYNAXIS of the THEOTOKOS – Divine Liturgy 10:00 a.m.

MONDAY, January 9th – FIRST MARTYR STEPHEN – Service at 10:00 a.m.

SATURDAY, January 14th – JULIAN NEW YEAR – Divine Liturgy 10:00 a.m.

WEDNESDAY, January 18th – The Eve of the Theophany: 6:00 p.m Festal Vespers with the Great Blessing of Water. A Parish Theophany Meal (Spil’na Kutia) will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. We extend a warm welcome to one and all to join us in this special celebration.

THURSDAY, January 19th – The Holy Theophany of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ: 9:30 a.m. hours; 10:00 Divine Liturgy followed by the Great Blessing of Water.

THIS YEAR OUR CHRISTMAS falls on a Saturday. We hope that all our parishioners will join us in the Services with prayers to Glorify our New born Christ Child. On Saturday, January 7th, the Christmas Services will begin with Great Compline at 9:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy will follow at 10:00 a.m.

All members and visitors are urged to attend these Services.

Nativity Fast

Please remember that a period of abstinence and penance is practiced by the Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches , in preparation for the Nativity of Christ, (January 7). The fast is similar to the Western Advent, except that it runs for 40 days instead of four weeks.

The fast is observed from November 28 to January 6 inclusive. The Nativity Fast serves to renew our spiritual unity with God and to prepare us for the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. Orthodox theology sees a synthesis between the body and the soul, so what happens to one affects the other. The church teaches that it is not enough to fast from food; one must also fast from anger, greed and covetousness. In addition to fasting, almsgiving is also emphasized.
