EASTER LUNCH (Spil`ne Svyachene) for all parishioners, their families and friends will be held on May 26 at 12:00 noon. Everyone is invited to participate. The cost of the lunch will be: Adults – $15; youth from 12 – 17 – $10; under 12 years – $5.

GRAVESIDE SERVICES – will be held on May 26th at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Anyone wishing to make other private arrangements may do so. Please contact Fr. Roman at 604-325-2639. Graveside Services are part of our Holy Tradition. Prayers are said annually. Do not be negligent in fulfilling this responsibility.

Orphanage Project in Ukraine

ORPHANAGE PROJECT IN UKRAINE : The Western Eparchy Council is now actively organizing a trip to Ukraine in the late summer of 2013. A small mission team will accompany Bishop Ilarion to Ukraine; its goal is to assist a local orphanage tend to its young community. The Western Eparchy is calling upon the assistance of congregations and individual members to assist with this project. Please make your donations to: Orphanage Project in Ukraine , c/o The western Eparchy. Please send your donations directly to The Western Eparchy Office, 11404 – 112 Ave., Edmonton , AS. T5G 0H6. The Eparchy will issues tax receipts for these donations. Every year our campers get to experience a fun filled, cultural and faith based program including ukrainian language classes, orthodox faith lessons, cultural arts and crafts, sports, games, great food and of course amazing friends.

All of this wrapped up into two weeks of fun in the sunshine in Abbotsford, BC.

SCHEDULE OF SERVICES for PALM SUNDAY, HOLY WEEK and EASTER – May 2013

APRIL 28 – Palm Sunday: Entry of Christ into Jerusalem . Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am. The pussy willows will be blessed at the end of the Holy Liturgy. Following their anointment, the willows will be distributed.

APRIL 29 – The beginning of HOLY WEEK: The final week before the observance of Christ’s Resurrection is known as the Holy Week or Passion Week. These are the holiest days of the year, a time for accentuated prayer and fasting. LET US DO WHATEVER WE CAN to observe this final week of the Great Lent.

MAY 2 – Great and Holy Thursday, Passion of Christ: Reading of the Twelve Gospels at 7:00 pm.

MAY 3 – Great and Holy Friday: Vespers and bringing out of the HOLY SHROUD (PLASHCHANYTSYA) at 7:00 pm.

MONDAY, MARCH 18 – BEGINNING OF THE GREAT LENT! Please make a real effort to participate in Holy Confession and Communion during this period.
IN PREPARATION FOR THE GREAT LENT when Divine Liturgies are served for the departed Souls of our family members, please submit your memorial booklet for commemoration to the priest. Please arrange to have your loved ones remembered in these special prayers.

LENTEN MEMORIAL SERVICES (Sorokousty) combined with the Divine Liturgy will be held on Sundays March 31, April 7 and 14 at 10:00 a.m. Memorial candles may be purchased at the vestibule table.
LENTEN POTLUCK LUNCH – Sunday, March 24th: In celebration of our church community, we are inviting you to participate in a Potluck Lunch on March 24th immediately following the Liturgy. Please sign the sheet posted on the Bulletin Board in the Auditorium to indicate the type of dish you will be bringing. Please bring all foods to the kitchen by 11am on March 24h. Those who will not be bringing a dish will be requested to pay $5.00 for the lunch. Please plan to join in this first time Lenten event.

ГОСПОД ВИМАГАЄ ПРОЩАТИ ОБРАЗИ ОДНЕ ОДНОМУ Дорогi браття i сестри!

Сьогоднi, “день прощення” – день, у який Церква встановила правило прощати одне одному образи. Християни повиннi припиняти ворожнечу мiж собою. Благочестивi люди дотримуються цього звичаю. Чому Свята Церква встановила напередоднi Великого посту день прощення? На пiдставi повелiння Господнього. Спаситель наш сказав: “Якщо ви прощатимете людям провини їхнi, то простить i вам Отець ваш Небесний. А коли не будете прощати людям провин їхнiх, то i Отець ваш не простить вам провин ваших” (Мф. 6, 14-15). Все тут просто і зрозуміло. В цей день прощення звернімось не до всіх а до тих кого образили за прощенням, щоб розпочати дні посту гідно і благочестиво.

MONDAY, MARCH 18, GREAT LENT BEGINS

Therefore, during Great Lent we follow the example set by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who fasted on our behalf forty days and forty nights (Matt. 4: 2).

It is time for reconciliation with our Lord! It is the beginning of a spiritual discipline until that Glorious Resurrection (May 5). Your Church encourages you to govern yourself accordingly. During this Lenten period, please be aware of the following: The first week of Lent should be meatless. The last week of Lent (Passion Week) is also meatless. Otherwise, all the faithful are reminded to refrain from eating meat on Wednesday and Friday. ( It should be meatless all through the whole Great Lent if possible). During the Lenten period, everyone should come forward to participate in the Last Supper and receive Sacraments of Holy Confession and Communion. Renew your Baptismal Pledge and cleanse it. Confessions will be heard Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m.

FASTING

St. John Chrysostom in one of his sermons, he said this about fasting: “The value of fasting consists not in abstinence from food, but in relinquishing of sinful practices… Do you fast? Give me proof of it by your works. If you see a poor man, take pity on him. If you see a friend being honoured, do not envy him. Do not let only your mouth fast, but also the eye, the ear, the feet, and the hands… Let the hands fast by being pure from avarice. Let the feet fast by ceasing from running

to forbidden spectacles. Let the eyes fast by not fixing themselves rudely on handsome countenances. Let the ear also fast. This consists in not listening to evil talk and calumnies. It has been said: Thou shalt not receive an idle report. Let the mouth also fast from words and railing. For what good is it if we abstain from meat, but bite and devour our brothers?”

Наступного дня захотів Він піти в Галілею. І знайшов Він Пилипа та й каже йому: Іди за Мною! А Пилип із Віфсаїди походив, із міста Андрія й Петра. Пилип Нафанаїла знаходить та й каже йому: Ми знайшли Того, що про Нього писав був Мойсей у Законі й Пророки, Ісуса, сина Йосипового, із Назарету. І сказав йому Нафанаїл: Та хіба ж може бути з Назарету що добре? Пилип йому каже: Прийди та побач. Ісус, угледівши Нафанаїла, що до Нього йде, говорить про нього: Ото справді ізраїльтянин, що немає в нім підступу! Говорить Йому Нафанаїл: Звідки знаєш мене? Ісус відповів і до нього сказав: Я бачив тебе ще давніш, ніж Пилип тебе кликав, як під фі?овим деревом був ти. Відповів Йому Нафанаїл: Учителю, Ти Син Божий, Ти Цар Ізраїлів! Ісус відповів і до нього сказав: Через те віриш ти, що сказав Я тобі, що під фі?овим деревом бачив тебе? Більш від цього побачиш! І Він каже йому: Поправді, поправді кажу вам: Відтепер ви побачите небо відкрите та Анголів Божих, що на Людського Сина підіймаються та спускаються. (1:43-51)
